mud larks

At last, it finally stopped raining long enough to get a decent Thursday night ride in. Eventful from the off, Lonesome Fox was abducted by aliens while crossing the A690 (come home soon, mate..) and as soon as we got thru Silksworth and left the tarmac the mud was there, lurking under the grass.. watery at first but gradually thickening to black porridge thru the woods... slippery as a fistful of butt cream, most of us stayed upright until the clarts gave way to giant lake-puddles, hub-deep water hazards that were so much fun we had to ride them twice.. in both directions.. well, what the hell, once you're wet you're wet... hot favourite for Best Ride of the Year, I reckon.

Last 2 Rides

Good ride a couple of weeks ago, and a good turn out. Fox leader, Leopard Fox, Legal, Urban, Taxi,Quick Brown and Pitbull.
Usual Ride up through Silksworth (the softies missing the hills) up throught the park and then on to the woods near Warden Law. It had rained the day before and the woods were very greasy, so lots of close calls on the corners and over the roots,, Brill !
Off to penshaw next, or so we thought, but a slight detour up through some woods took us too far in the wrong direction, so the ride seemed to be over quite quick as we found ourselves back on the river before we knew it...not to worry it was fantastic weather and a good laugh all the way.

This is Leopard fox, or Bri as he is commonly known, on his nice new Yeti, all dressed up in his matching kit, Doesn't he look pretty and very well coordinated.

Last weeks ride 26/6/08..Poor turnout, most had good excuses, some have gone into hibernation (must think they're bears.)Only 4 out this week, but what a ride. We set off up the lines and then down onto the river, tearing it up on an amazing bit of single track down to the river side and along to Cox green. While in the area we stopped for a photo shoot coz we found a crocodile

After our bit of tom foolery the decision was made to head up to, you guessed it, penshaw. We tried to get there up the edge of a field coz it looked like we could, but we couldn't so we ended up climbing up through the local estate and down through a fab wood full of fairies and mushrooms, time for another photo shoot.
Then down through the golf course and down again through more beautiful woods to the river and back to town.. (see route log above).. low turnout good ride...

FOX GOD

At last the true fox leader has been photographed, he complained about the altura jacket being the wrong size and the fact that we made him wear a helmet (''no helmet no ride'')he made us pay him back the money he wasted at the hairdressers. But apart from that he was a good laugh, having us all rolling around on the ground laughing, telling us tales of him and John Tomac, Gary fisher and Tinker Juarez back in the days when mountain biking was an adventure, times when you would ride over your next door neighbours perfectly mowed front lawn, just to be offroad. The Fox leader keeps these dreams alive..Rock on F.L. Peace xx

Up the coast

Nice trip to South Shields and back through the Cleadon hills, a favourite this one.
Heading off from the shop we head down river to the sea then along through seaburn to Latimers fish Deli. Everybody is warm by now so from then then on the ride gets better. Nice single track past the firing range (duck and cover) and on past Souter light house and then the Grotto. Now its a big loop along the cliffs to Trow Quarry round and back to the Grotto. We cross the road now and head up hill along the edge of the golf course, over lizard lane and up another tech climb to the top of redwell quarry. The riding here is amazing , exposed rock, long grass, spikey things ''it's great !!''.
After a short ride round the quarry we drop down and left past the famous white horse, painted 2650 yeas ago by the sand dancing tribe (so we're told) and kept going by locals with spare gloss after a springclean. Then onto cleadon hills, down the dip up the steep thing and down through a cool single track section to the bottom corner of the hills, over the style we found a fab track edging a field which eventually brought us out on Wellands Lane in Whitburn. That was the good bit over with, now we just had to head back up to the shop the way we came...cool ride , good company..
The White Horse of Cleadon is visible from er, Cleadon...

River riding

Another corner piece in the track jigsaw... turns out the south side of the Wear between Coxgreen and Pallion has a nice technical track hugging the banks all the way into Sunderland, past the cliffs at North Hylton and finally up a grassy bank & into the back end of Pallion. Might be fun the other way round... great ride before that, we had perfect weather & just enough mud in the woods to give the frames a decent facepack; slimy stuff, just a thin layer that had everyone skeeting all over the place. Didn't get any pix, worse luck, maybe next week someone might remember to bring a fuggin camera...

Lambton and back

Foxes were few on the ground tonight but it was fast and exiting. The good old faithful surfaced for this one, and as ever, rode like a dream...

Penshaw Monument

Nice steady 22 miler from the shop last night. One puncture and one trashed front mech, not bad going. Up the C2C and on to Penshaw, 5 minutes break for photo shoot and to give Bri some time to make his mark on the monument, then back through the forest, thru the 3 parks and into town. Fab ride, will do this one again...

cheezy grins at the foot of the monument
